In Character began life as a 5 character comedic monologue show way back at the Edinburgh Festival in 2002. But it wasn’t until 2016 when Steve properly began to rewrite and create newer characters that it really started to gather momentum. It was at times grotesque, pathos-laden, farcical, touching and acutely observed.

The first quintet of characters included a fast talking ‘urban’ Mayor of Kentish Town, effete but violent ex criminal Queenie, ex stunt-man Dave Pike, waltzer owner Ernie Vas and celebrity stalker Lyn. The show headlined the one person theatre festival at the Seven Dials Playhouse in the West End and was part of the Underbelly line-up for their South Bank Festival. This year five new characters have been added including a former Royal butler, a sadistic teacher, a style guru, a modern Druid troubleshooter and a Northern Soul fanatic. Steve does not leave the stage during the show with all character transformations happening in full view of the audience. All music in the show has been written and produced by Steve.
